EDMOND —
Wilbur (Hoppy) and Lela Chandler of Edmond, Okla. will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary on August 4, 2011 during a dinner with their children and grandchildren in Oklahoma City.
Wilbur Chandler and Lela Biggs were married Aug. 4, 1951 in Pauls Valley, Okla. at the Methodist parsonage, officiated by Rev. Walter H. Royal. The couple met when Lela and her roommate were riding around with one of Hoppy’s friends, who picked up Hoppy and they were introduced. They have been riding around together ever since.
After they married, they lived in Guthrie for 21 years and moved to Edmond where they have lived for the past 39 years.
Hoppy retired in August 1971 as a lieutenant from the Guthrie Police Department after 20 years. He worked at Central State University and then worked at the Federal Reserve Bank as a security guard and retired in 1992 after 17 years.
Lela worked for the Logan County Health Department in Guthrie and the Department of Human Services in Oklahoma City and retired in 1992 with 28 years of service.
Hoppy enjoys playing pool and is an avid golfer. He has won several tournaments and trophies and has scored eight holes-in one.
Since her retirement, Lela has completed five family trees and enjoys getting together with her classmates from Coyle High School. She also enjoys playing bingo and belongs to a bunko group that meets monthly.
Hoppy and Lela have a son David and his wife Siriphan Chandler of Oklahoma City, Okla., and a daughter Shirley and her husband Lindsey Anderson also of Oklahoma City, three grandsons, and are anticipating the arrival of a great-grandson in August.
The couple has planned a trip to Eureka Springs, Ark. and Branson, Mo. to celebrate their anniversary.
