EDMOND —
Amzi and Karon Gregory of Edmond, Okla. will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on April 16, 2011 during a private dinner party hosted by their family at the Deep Fork Grill in Oklahoma City, Okla.
Amzi Gregory and Karon Dawkins were married March 24, 1961 in Sayre, Okla.
Amzi earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry and Education from Oklahoma State University. In 1961, he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United State Air Force and served in Illinois, Montana and in Vietnam. In 1967 he began teaching in the Weatherford Public School system, and earned his Masters degree in Education in 1970 from Southwestern Oklahoma State University. In 1974 Amzi was activated into the Air National Guard where he served full time until 1991, when he retired as a Lt. Colonel and Commander for the 137th CAM Squadron.
Karon earned her Bachelors degree in Social Work from Southwestern Oklahoma State College. She enjoyed a 27-year career with the Oklahoma Department of of Human Services, from where she retired in 1999. Her passion for helping children and families has allowed her to work part-time for ODHS, where she continues to be an advocate for children and families across Oklahoma.
Both Karon and Amzi are active within Southern Hills Christian Church where they have been members since 1976. Amzi has served as an officer of the board at SHCC, while Karon has served as a deacon and other roles within the church. Amzi also serves on the board of directors for the Central Christian Camp and Conference Center in Guthrie, Okla. and is active with Central Oklahoma Habitat for Humanity, WHIZ Kids, Edmond Rotary Club, and has been the coordinator for the Southern Hills Christian Church Pumpkin Patch fundraiser for 15 years. Karon is also involved within Southern Hills Christian Church where she is involved in KeenAgers, Stephens Ministry, and she stays active by walking, swimming, reading, and spending time with family and friends.
Anzi and Karon have two daughters, Laura Klutts of Edmond, Okla. and Kara Gregory of Euless, Texas. The couple is blessed with three grandchildren: Tyler, Morgan, and Madison.
Karon and Amzi say that the secret to their marriage has been honoring their love and commitment to each other and maintaining a strong tolerance to life’s challenges.
