2013 Veterans Day events slated

EDMOND — The following list includes events scheduled for Monday in observance of Veterans Day:

• Most local, county, state and federal offices will be closed Monday in observance of Veterans Day. There will be no delivery by the U.S. Postal Service and the Edmond Senior Center will be closed. The Edmond City Council will meet at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in Council Chambers, 20 S. Littler, instead of on its regular Monday evening schedule.

• The University of Central Oklahoma Veteran Higher Education Resource Office (VetHERO) will honor those who have served our country with a Veterans Day ceremony at 2 p.m. Monday at the Old North Amphitheatre on the west side of UCO’s campus. The ceremony will include the UCO Broncho Battalion Pershing Rifles as color guard and music from the Central Sound Brass Quintet. Oklahoma Army National Guard Capt. Brent Weece will deliver a Veterans Day address. Weece, a native of Miami, is a 10-year veteran of the Guard. He has served tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. Warm beverages will be served at the ceremony and the first 100 attendees will receive a UCO fleece ear band courtesy of the Walmart Foundation. The ceremony is free and open to the public. • The annual 45th Infantry Division Veterans Day Ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. Monday at the Oklahoma Military Department, 3501 Military Circle in Oklahoma City. Col. David B. Burgy, commander 138th Fighter Wing, Oklahoma Air National Guard, will give the keynote address. Burgy is the senior officer responsible for organizing, training and equipping 1,100 wing personnel to provide the governor and federal commanders with personnel and equipment to meet state and national emergencies and steady state force requirements. Many military and civilian organizations will be represented during the outdoor ceremony with Color Guards and the “Governor’s Own” 145th Army Band providing music.
