ELAINE WARNER | SPECIAL TO THE SUN Construction on Florence’s Duomo (cathedral) began in the late 1200s though the façade only dates back to 1888. The campanile or bell tower to the right was designed in the 1330s by the artist Giotto. It was completed after his death by Andrea Pisano and Francesco Talenti.
