Tornado reported in Edmond

Oklahoma County in Tornado Watch

EDMOND — KOCO Channel 5 is reporting a tornado now in Logan County after it made contact in northwest Edmond near Kelly and Covell.

The City of Edmond sounded its tornado warning sirens at 2:49 p.m. today, said Claudia Deakins, city spokeswoman. The downtown city complex lost power about 2:59 p.m. today, she said.

Bret Towne, associate superintendent of district operations for Edmond Public Schools, said all students are sheltering in their buildings at this time. Students on buses were taken to the closest school, where they are now sheltering. Once the danger has passed, the bus routes will resume. At this time, Cheyenne Middle School students are being released from school.

Linnis DeRieux, spokeswoman for the Deer Creek Public Schools, said the district is contacting principals about activating the district's tornado shelter plan.

The National Weather Service in Norman states that in a Tornado Warning, a tornado may form at anytime and residents should take cover, including abandoning mobile homes and vehicles, if possible. Move to an interior room or hallway on the lowest floor and stay away from windows.

As of 2:12 p.m., a severe storm was spotted 17 miles southwest of Bethany and moving northeast at 40 mph.

The National Weather Service has issued a Tornado Watch for 25 counties in Oklahoma, including Oklahoma County. A severe storm is making its way through the Oklahoma City metro area now, with hail being reported in the Yukon area. The watch is scheduled to end at 8 p.m.
