Third, fourth and fifth-grade chess club teams from Ida Freeman Elementary School in Edmond were crowned state champions in all three grades at the 14th Annual Oklahoma Scholastic Chess State Championship at Will Rogers High School in Tulsa Nov. 9. Third-grader Carter Chesnut individually won first place overall for his grade. “It was great to watch these kids, when the outcome was uncertain, fight back and win,” said David Nichols, fifth-grade math and chess club teacher with Ida Freeman Elementary School.
