Students show off ‘Home away from home’

Parents tread ice and snow to make students’ open house

EDMOND The somewhat icy roads and snowy weather did not keep Northern Hills Elementary parents from attending an important event in every child’s life — open house.

The parents followed as their children showed them around the school and pointed out their most recent projects Thursday.

“Basically, the children are taking their parents in the classroom and showing them what they do,” said Principal Nellie Sizemore.

Students also were able to show their parents what they do in physical education and in music.

“The school is a home of the mind. We want this to be a happy place. Happy children will learn,” Sizemore said.

Traci Green said she is pleased with the progress of her 7-year-old daughter, Kylie.

“I think she’s done very well,” Green said. “This is her first year in public school and I’m impressed.”

Kylie said she was looking forward to showing her parents the gym and buying books at the book fair set up in the library.

Shelly Anderson, first-grade teacher, said her class showcased many projects they did to recognize the upcoming 100th day of school. For one of the projects, her students drew a picture of what they thought they would like in 100 years.

Naia Easterling, one of Anderson’s students, showed her mother around the classroom. She said her favorite project was creating a person out of paper plates and her clothes. The plate people were sitting at the students’ desks as if they were real children.

Easterling said her favorite thing about open house is being in class and being with her teachers and friends.

Sizemore said she was a little worried about the weather but was pleased with the number of parents who still came to open house.

“This is our home away from home,” Sizemore said.
