Lowe's plats up for hearing

Courtney Bryce
Special to The Sun

EDMOND The Edmond Planning Commission will have a public hearing and consider both the preliminary and the final plats for the Lowe’s Home Improvement Center at its meeting March 11.

Lowe’s will be in the Covell Village development on the southwest corner of Kelly and Covell roads. As previously reported in The Edmond Sun, the city approved an agreement in August with Jemsite Development, the developer for Lowe’s, to accelerate the widening of one-half mile of the two western lanes of Kelly Avenue just south of the Covell intersection. The Kelly widening project from Danforth to Coffee Creek already had been approved by the Oklahoma Department of Transportation for 80 percent funding in the 2009 fiscal year. The Sun previously reported that Lowe’s agreed to fund the portion that would have been paid for with ODOT funds, about $900,000 to $1 million, to speed up construction on the project.

Josh Moore, commercial manager for Turner and Company, said the Edmond company sold the land to Lowe’s and the site plan already has been approved. He said it is routine to present both the preliminary plat and the final plat at the same time.

“It’s all laid out. Nothing is going to change as far as easements and in the amount of land. We’re not thinking of changing anything,” Moore said.

He said there are about 60 acres of commercial land in the Covell Village development, which is home to Wal-Greens and soon will house a high-end apartment complex. Moore said after construction is complete on Lowe’s, the development will have about 35 acres of commercial land left.

Moore said Turner and Company also will present a preliminary plat tonight for Phase II of the Chitwood Farms development.

Mike Cunningham, development administrator, said today 95 acres of the 325-acre section was donated as a conservation easement to preserve that historic farm land.

Forty homes were built in the addition surrounding the conserved land.

About 61 homes will be built during the second phase.

Moore said Turner and Company is excited about its future commercial and residential opportunities in that area.

The Planning Commission also will consider the final plat for the Kelly Lakes Business Park, on the east side of Santa Fe about a quarter mile south of Sorghum Mill Road, and the preliminary plat for the Sun Country addition, south of Covell Road and east of Midwest Boulevard.
