The sounds of music will drift to the ears of many proud Edmond parents as five elementary schools present music programs today.
Washington Irving, Cross Timbers, Will Rogers, Charles Haskell and Northern Hills each will showcase a grade that has worked together with their music teachers to learn and perform a set of songs. Several of the shows include dialogue and dancing.
Madalene Corsoro, Washington Irving music teacher, said their fifth-grade program follows an Oklahoma theme in recognition of the centennial year. She said students will perform seven songs and six dances, including ballet and an American Indian dance. Corsoro said the students learned the songs in music class. The PTO hired a choreographer to teach dances during the students’ P.E. classes.
Corsoro said she is trying to educate the students about what has happened in Oklahoma the past 100 years.
“It’s part of our core curriculum to integrate music with class curriculum,” she said.
Allison Chastain, Will Rogers music teacher, said she loves teaching educational songs. She said she taught the second-graders about rocks and volcanoes while they learned songs for their musical, “Geology Rocks.”
“I think they’re doing a really good job,” Chastain said. “I’m really impressed.”
The students learned 10 different songs that talk about various subjects concerning rocks, including volcanoes, continental plates and erosion.
The fourth-graders at Cross Timbers will be “Making Music” with their show, which includes 10 songs.
“I try to impress upon my students that they are musicians despite age and perceived ability,” said Leah McDonald, music teacher. “It’s all about music in our school and how there is music everywhere you go.”
She said the program is about how music can be found in any sound. One of the songs talks about how any beat makes a person want to move.
Charles Haskell fourth-graders and Northern Hills fifth-graders also will perform musical programs today.
