Distinguished soprano to perform free concert at Jazz Lab
The University of Central Oklahoma’s School of Music will host a free concert featuring internationally acclaimed soprano and visiting artist Barbara DeMaio Caprilli at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the UCO Jazz Lab.
Caprilli will perform arias and Italian art songs, Broadway favorites and spirituals.
A well-known recitalist and performer in both opera and musical theater, Caprilli’s vast repertoire includes roles of a Puccini and Verdi soprano and performances in some of the most prestigious international theatres in the world.
She lives in Winston-Salem, N.C. where she is head of the voice department at Salem College and a frequent adjudicator for local and national singing competitions.
In addition to her performance at the Jazz Lab, Caprilli also will teach master classes to UCO students.
“The Vocal Arts Division in the School of Music is delighted to have the opportunity to bring Ms. Caprilli to our campus,” said Barbara Streets, division head for the Vocal Arts in the UCO School of Music.
“Ms. Caprilli’s work with our students, vocal performance majors, music education majors and music theater majors, beginners to advanced, will enhance their artistic development as they strive for excellence.”
These events are sponsored, in part, by the Ad Astra Foundation.

Library to present quilt exhibit to pay tribute to heroes and troops
The Edmond Library, 10 S. Boulevard, will present the Buckboard Quilts’ God Bless America Quilt Exhibit from 2-3 p.m. Oct. 11. These 22x22-inch and larger patriotic quilts capture the essence of “America the Beautiful” by paying tribute to our American Heroes and Troops, depicting “Liberty and Justice for All” and expressing flag-waving loyalty to our “One Nation Under God.”
Judy Howard, owner for 32 years of Buckboard Quilts and award-winning author of “Heavenly Patchwork I & II” and “Centennial Stitches — Oklahoma History in Quilts,” also will sign books and present her program “Under the Cover with Granny,” with special tips for preserving your family heritage.
The exhibit includes a miniature quilt by Kaye Hansen that represents her Independence Quilt. In 2005, Hansen’s brother Don volunteered to train police officers in Iraq. Compelled to create a quilt for Don, Kaye overcame this former Airman’s protests by suggesting he give it to other soldiers when he came home. Don presented the quilt to Gunny Sizemore, supervisor of Camp Striker Stables in Baghdad, Iraq, which offers a home away from home for U.S. forces.
