UCO to present free choral concert

The University of Central Oklahoma’s School of Music will present a fall choral concert at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 11 at the First Presbyterian Church Great Hall, at 1001 S. Rankin in Edmond.

The performance will feature the UCO Concert Chorale and Cantilena Women’s Choir directed by UCO Director of Choral Studies, Dr. Karl Nelson.

Highlights will include a double chorus motet by Heinrich Schütz, a setting of the well-known Psalm 23 by Franz Schubert, “Sing a New Song to the Lord” by Paul Basler and the a cappella, three-section work, “Hymn to St. Cecilia” by Benjamin Britten.

The concert will close with Mack Wilberg’s rousing arrangement of the American folk song, “Cindy.”

Admission is free and open to the public.

UCO professor to speak on evolution of 18th-century opera

The Midwestern American Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies and the University of Central Oklahoma, in cooperation with the Oklahoma Humanities Council (OHC), will present “The Evolution of Eighteenth-Century Opera: An Overview,” a presentation by Dr. Kevin Eckard of the University of Central Oklahoma School of Music.

Dr. Eckard will examine the transformation of that innovative eighteenth-century form, opera, and how its relationship with the emerging middle class moved its focus from traditional classical themes to stories pitched to appeal to the masses. To illustrate this transformation, he will perform arias by these composers as part of his lecture.

The presentation will take place in the Crystal Room of the Skirvin Hilton Hotel at One Park Avenue in Oklahoma City at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, October 10. The public is invited and there is no charge.



UCO Chamber Swingers to perform vocal jazz favorites

The University of Central Oklahoma’s School of Music will present a vocal jazz concert featuring the UCO Chamber Swingers at 8 p.m. Oct. 14 at the UCO Jazz Lab.

The concert will include familiar jazz tunes such as “Ain’t Misbehavin,” “But Not for Me” and “Emily” along with other favorites by Thomas “Fats” Waller, Manning Sherwin, Johnny Mercer and George Gershwin.

Directed by Dr. Karl Nelson, the UCO Chamber Swingers consists of 12 full-time students, including music majors and non-majors.

The ensemble has taken tours with the UCO Concert Chorale throughout Oklahoma. In addition, they have performed as a part of the UCO commencement ceremonies and other local events.

“Hopefully the audience will leave the performance satisfied to hear an ensemble sing one of their favorites, bringing back good memories or making new ones.” said Nelson.

“We’d love to see a good turnout, supporting vocal jazz music in the Edmond area.”
