New library to join Metro system

OKLA. CITY — During the past 13 months, while the Southern Oaks Library was undergoing renovations, library services were re-located to the Almonte Shopping Center at 2914 S.W. 59th St. The temporary Almonte Library closed its doors in September when the newly remodeled Southern Oaks Library opened to the public at 6900 S. Walker, but it will soon re-open.

“The Almonte location was so popular with people who had never been to Southern Oaks,” said MLS Executive Director Donna Morris, “we asked the City of Oklahoma City if we could keep it open. The City was as excited about the idea, so we contacted the owners of the property and they were eager to get on board, too.”

Within a 10-month period, the Almonte location had 5,606 new customers that had not used any of the Metropolitan Libraries previously. Once books are purchased and staff is hired, the library will open for customers. One staff member has already been hired. Librarian LaVetta Dent, who is currently manager of The Village Library, will become the manager of the Almonte Library. Dent brings more than 30 years of experience with MLS to the job and is ready to take the reins.

“We’ll be reworking the floor space Almonte had when it subbed for Southern Oaks,” Dent said, “by creating some meeting rooms. We don’t know just yet when the library will be ready for the public, but we’re hoping it won’t be long. Stay tuned for updates.”
