Local author tells all her PR secrets

EDMOND — Cyndy Hoenig has the résumé to back up the title of her recently released book “PR Rock Star.”

Hoenig, an Edmond resident, said she hopes her story of reinventing her career at the age of 40 into a successful public relations agent in Hollywood will be an inspiration to others who find themselves suddenly in need of a career change.

She had moved her family to California when divorce struck and she was suddenly raising four daughters alone. Hoenig needed a career boost and fast.

She details in “PR Rock Star” how she talked her way into a job she really wasn’t qualified for at the time, but made every effort to become an expert in her field. Actress Suzanne Somers is one of Hoenig’s former celebrity clients and she endorses the book, stating that Hoenig is “truly one of the best and most competent PR people I have had in my career.”

Hoenig became director of the Consumer Television Division of Bender, Goldman & Helper and managed media campaigns for television programs on NBC, CBS, Fox and Disney Channel. She has worked with numerous stars and on many major media campaigns for nonprofits in the Oklahoma City area.

While Hoenig has an inspiring personal story, the book is actually a how-to-guide for businesses and individuals in crafting a public relations plan for themselves. She explains the how and why of public relations while relaying several scenarios and how to handle them. Chapter 8 focuses on 10 steps to becoming your own publicist. Each chapter also features PR Star Files with anecdotes from Hoenig’s career. The book also includes a list of the top 100 newspaper business editors in the nation and how to contact them.

“I want to do something that everyone can relate to,” Hoenig said, noting that PR is something every business needs in order to succeed — whether they know it or not.

The publicist offers a lot of practical advice throughout her new book, but her top tip is one given to her by a former executive at Paramount Pictures. “She told me to always return phone calls within 24 hours,” Hoenig said. “That’s one of the best pieces of advice I’ve ever been given. If you don’t return phone calls and emails you don’t know what opportunities you might be missing out on.”

Hoenig has found a worldwide audience on Twitter with her #PRTips. She joined the social media platform in 2009 and paid attention to what others were doing there.

“I wanted to know what has your attention, not what you had for breakfast,” she said. “I thought people need to know how to do (PR) so I just started throwing out little tips.”

Those little tips blossomed into an ebook, “600 PR, Marketing and Social Media Tips,” which is available for a free download at http://pureprokc.com/600-diy-pr-tips. The book was downloaded 50,000 times in just a few weeks of release, Hoenig said.

She now has more than 13,000 Twitter followers and continues to grow the social media presence of her company Pure PR on multiple venues.

“PR Rock Star” is the first in a series of business books published by local publishing house Buzz Books USA. Other authors will add to the Little Brand series during the next year.
