EDMOND — Middle school students selected from across the state met Feb. 1 at Santa Fe High School in Edmond to sing in a special concert.

Oklahoma Music Educators Associations coordinates the Circle the State with Song Concert and this year is the 21st annual program.

“Nineteen regions in Oklahoma are all singing the same songs at different concerts from January through March,” said Rachel Radcliff, Orvis Risner music teacher.

Exceptional music students get the opportunity to work with guest choral clinicians on challenging music and participate in an exciting choral experience with other students, Radcliff said.

“During the clinic music teachers have the opportunity to observe and learn as the clinician works with the students and to share vocal pedagogy ideas with other teachers,” Radcliffe added.

Both students and teachers participated in the 2014 All-OMEA Children’s Choir.

Teachers must be an active member of OMEA to register students, and any school in Oklahoma whose enrollment includes grades four through eight may enter their students in one of the CTSWS Festivals, according to the Circle The State With Song website. Home schooled students also are eligible to sing in the concert.

Music teachers may bring a specific number of students based on the school building’s population in grades four through eight.

Margaret Ann Adams was the conductor for the 2014 Choral Festival, and Ron Wallace was the accompanist.

Adams has been the music educator and choral director for Bethany Public Schools for 15 years where she teaches music to grades K-5 as well as the 6th grade chorus at Bethany Middle School. She was recently awarded the OMEA State Exemplary Teacher Award. She is also the Professor of Elementary Music Methods at Southern Nazarene University.

Wallace is an educator, church musician and professional accompanist in the Oklahoma City area. Currently he is teaching vocal music at Edmond North High School. Wallace is also the organist at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Oklahoma City. Wallace has taught music at the secondary level since 1990 and has been a church musician for the past 40 years. He also plays for numerous events throughout the United States and Europe.

2014 Region K Circle the State with Song Co-Chairs are Angie McKenna from Edmond Sequoyah Middle School and Jessica Wheeler, Classsen SAS. Leah McDonald, Edmond Cross Timbers Elementary, and McKenna are 2014 State Circle the State with Song co-chairs. 2014 All-State Children’s Chorus Co-Chairs are Cryse Burns and Leah SaeLim.
