Deborah Bouziden was born and raised in Oklahoma, so when her publishing company approached her about writing a book titled “Remarkable Oklahoma Women” she was excited to begin her research.
“I traveled all over Oklahoma and would get immersed in the research and the amazing things these women were able to accomplish,” Bouziden said. “I had to keep reminding myself to stay on track because I was only able to choose 12 women. I was only able to give you an overview of these women, so my hope was that it interested you enough to go out and learn more about these ladies.”
Bouziden spent two years on “Remarkable Oklahoma Women.” One year was used to gather research and the next year she wrote, tying all of these women’s stories together. Bouziden originally wanted to include 25 Oklahoma women in her book but was asked by her publishing company to narrow it down to 12. The requirements for these women to be considered for the book was that they had to be born before the 1900s and make an impact in Oklahoma.
“The women in this book were so strong and inspirational, it was hard to include their life in 3,000 words,” Bouziden said.
Bouziden was first published in 1985 with the first story she ever wrote. It was a 900-word, non-fiction piece titled “Go For It.” Bouziden has been signed with Globe Pequot Press in Guilford, Conn., since 2002. Globe rejected Bouziden when she sent in a proposal story she wanted to base in the south but they came back with an offer for her to write about the women from her home state.
“Rejection makes me dig my heels in and show them,” Bouziden said.
Bouziden has been a resident in Edmond since 1983 but spends her summers at her home in Estes Park, Colo.
She recently wrapped up her book tour in Edmond but has left signed copies at Best of Books at 1313 E. Danforth Road in Edmond and at Full Circle Bookstore at 1900 N.W. Expressway in Oklahoma City. Paperback copies are $14.95.
Bouziden is referenced as the “How To Queen” by her editor. Her other books include “Insiders’ Guide to Oklahoma City,” “How to Start a Home-based House Painting Business” and “Oklahoma Off the Beaten Path.”
