Bestselling author to visit UCO Oct. 9

Special to The Sun

EDMOND — Koren Zailckas, author of “Smashed: Story of a Drunken Girlhood,” a New York Times bestseller in 2005, will speak at the University of Central Oklahoma at noon Oct. 9 in Constitution Hall in the Nigh University Center.

Presented by the UCO Wellness Center and the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention Office, Zailckas will talk about her experiences with alcohol and her road to recovery. Zailckas is brought to UCO by Teen Recovery Solutions and the UrChOices grant.

“Alcohol can be the intersection of so many problems,” said Bruce Lochner, director of the UCO Student Counseling Center. “From assault to dropping out of school to binge drinking, it’s the common denominator. If we are able to make a three percent difference, imagine what we could do in a lifetime. We’re very excited to host Koren and hope that her experiences and advice can help our students.”

A New York native and Syracuse University graduate, Zailckas also has written “Fury,” the sequel to “Smashed,” and recently released her newest novel, “Mother, Mother.”

“Smashed” was written and released in 2005 and spent more than 10 weeks on The New York Times Best Seller list. The book centers on Zailckas’ long battle with alcohol abuse and how she dealt with her experiences. “Fury” followed in 2010, and it focused on the combination of psychological research and more of Zailckas’ story.

The event is free and open to the public.
