Concert set for Monday night

Special to The Sun

EDMOND — The University of Central Oklahoma Jazz Studies Division will present a performance by the Hal Galper Trio at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the UCO Jazz Lab, 100 E. Fifth St. in Edmond.

A Grammy Award-winner for his recordings with Phil Woods, Galper has recorded more than 90 records and has worked with big names in jazz including Chet Baker and Cannonball Adderley.

His performance will include both original music and his interpretation of well-known jazz standards.

“Hal Galper is widely recognized as one of the top jazz pianists in the world today,” said Brian Gorrell, head of Central’s Jazz Studies Division.

Galper is also a highly esteemed educator, his theoretical and practical articles having been published in six DownBeat Magazine editions.

The Hal Galper Trio will participate in instrumental clinics, focusing on the piano, bass and drums from 2-3 p.m. Monday in the UCO Jazz Lab. Following the clinics, the Jazz Lab will also present a master class with the Hal Galper Trio from 3:15-4:30 p.m.

“Hal Galper is a world-class educator and lecturer in addition to his performance skills.  For the jazz division, having Galper here is the perfect balance of the very highest level of jazz performance combined with the very highest level of jazz education,” Gorrell said. “We hope the public will take advantage of this unique opportunity.”

Tickets are $20 for the general public and $10 for students with a valid I.D. Tickets can be purchased by calling the UCO Jazz Lab at 359-7989.

Ticketholders are welcome to attend the clinic and master class.
