Camp Fire members sell candy to attend camp

Special to The Sun

OKLA. CITY — Camp Fire Heart of Oklahoma, a nonprofit youth service organization, kicked off its annual candy sale Thursday that will run through Feb. 24. During the sale, Camp Fire members work for five weeks to earn money to attend summer camp and gain funds to attend college after high school graduation. These efforts, coupled with support from central Oklahoma citizens and businesses, help Camp Fire maintain a full range of programs and services that directly enrich the lives of youth in our area and to better our community.

“Candy sales are a tradition with Camp Fire. By participating in the sale, young people are taking part in a unique learning opportunity emphasizing public speaking, math skills, teamwork, responsibility, confidence and goal setting,” said Joanna Yozzo, Camp Fire Club program director.

Businesses and individuals may also donate candy for U.S. Troops overseas. Each year Camp Fire partners with Operation Pioneer Spirit and Blue Star Mothers to ship candy to service men and women. Last year, Camp Fire sent more than 150 cases to troops.

During the sale, a variety of World’s Finest chocolate candy, including cashew clusters, peanut butter bears, pecan clusters and malted milk balls will be available to purchase. For individuals looking for a sugar-free option, Camp Fire will also be selling Camper’s nut mix. Prices for candy range from $2-$6.
