EDMOND — ‘THE RUNAWAY HUG’

BY NICK BLAND

“The Runaway Hug” celebrates the imaginative powers of children and the extraordinary love to be found in ordinary bedtime routines.

When Mommy jokes that she only has one hug left, Lucy decides she must keep Mommy’s last hug safe. As Lucy shares the hug with everyone in her large and loving family, she is always careful to get it back… until the canine member of the family refuses to play along!

This portrayal of a family’s bedtime routine is sweet and a quick read. Award-winning illustrator Freya Blackwood sketches a cluttered home that feels rich with love, reminiscent of the messy home in “Love You Forever.” Younger children will have fun pointing out toys and objects strewn throughout the house. And both young and older children alike will be sure to want a hug and kiss at the end!

Perfect for Valentine’s Day, this is a family-friendly bedtime story that parents and kids will be sure to love and embrace!

Ages 3-7.

‘WINTER SKY’

BY PATRICIA REILLY GIFF

Beloved, two-time Newbery Honor winner Patricia Reilly Giff has written an action-packed adventure with “Winter Sky,” an empowering story about the fiery courage born from love.

Sirens! A scary sound, especially to Siria, whose brave pop is a firefighter. Siria loves everyone at Pop’s city firehouse. She also loves to study the stars. Her mother named her after the brightest start in the winter sky.

When Siria hears sirens, she sneaks out to chase the trucks, to bring Pop and the other firefighters luck. She’d be in big trouble if she ever got caught. Good thing her best friend, Douglas, is always by her side.

As Christmas approaches, Siria suspects that someone in the neighborhood is setting fires. She has to find out who’s doing it. When clues point to a surprising suspect, she realizes that solving this mystery will take all kinds of courage.

Patricia Reilly Giff, the author of many beloved and award-winning books, is at her best in this action-packed story. In “Winter Sky,” friends, family, and a very special dog help Siria see how brave she really is.

Ages 8-12.
