UCO Kaleidoscope Dance Company presents spring concert April 3-5

Special to The Sun

EDMOND — The University of Central Oklahoma Department of Dance will present the UCO Kaleidoscope Dance Company spring concert at 7:30 p.m. April 3-5 at Mitchell Hall Theater, located on campus, with a special interactive encore planned following the April 4 performance.

The 20 student members of the Kaleidoscope Dance Company will perform an eclectic line up of pieces choreographed by Central faculty members Jill Priest, Hui Cha Poos, Robyn Pasternack, Tina Kambour and Emily South. The company also will perform works by guest choreographers James Gregg, Masayo Yamaguchi and Will Johnston.

“This year’s Kaleidoscope theme is to interact with the audience,” said Kambour, Kaleidoscope’s artistic director.

“Audience members will be invited to participate in a fun, easy way with the opening and closing works of the evening. All participation is voluntary, of course.”

Also, for a one-time event after the performance on Friday, the dance company invites attendees to participate in an interactive encore, incorporating an across-campus walk that includes mini-performances at the university’s Labyrinth and Plunkett Park and a grand finale, site-specific choreographed piece at Broncho Lake titled “Godai.”

Translated from Japanese, “Godai” means “Five Great,” referring to the five elements of the spiritual world: earth, water, fire, wind and void.

This site-specific choreographed piece will not only utilize aspects of the water features and architectural structures around the lake but will also include Central Japanese student musicians performing on Kodo drums.

“Choreographers have been creating site-specific dances for decades,” Kambour said. “The company is excited to venture out of Mitchell Hall and share this outdoor performance experience.”

Attendees are encouraged to view “Godai” from the Nigh University Center.

Guests also can attend a fundraising reception directly following the piece at the balcony terrace located on the north side of the second floor of the NUC. The reception is $25 per person and includes a champagne toast and sweets. Proceeds will benefit a new dance rehearsal space.

TICKETS for the Kaleidoscope Dance Company concert are $14 for adults; $10 for non-UCO students and Central faculty and staff with a valid ID; and free for UCO students with a valid ID. Tickets may be purchased by calling the Mitchell Hall Box Office at 974-3375 or visiting www.click4tix.com/uco.
