Tornadoes hit Oklahoma for 2nd straight day

Associated Press

CRAWFORD At least one tornado touched down in western Oklahoma on Sunday and damaged two homes as severe storms moved across the state for the second straight day.

A mobile home and a frame home were damaged by a twister in Ellis County, said state Department of Emergency Management spokeswoman Michelann Ooten. She said there were no injuries reported in Sunday's storms, a day after three people were hurt by twisters elsewhere in northwestern Oklahoma.

Numerous roads and bridges were also reported closed due to heavy rainfall that accompanied the storms on back-to-back days.

Sheriff Joe Hay said a tornado came down in a field Sunday afternoon in Roger Mills County but did not cause any damage before moving northward into neighboring Ellis County.

"We have no damage in Roger Mills County that we've found," Hay said. "It mostly was open field."

A tornado warning was issued for both counties before the twister touched down.

The Ellis County sheriff's office refused to release any information on the storm, and Ellis County Emergency Management director Russell Miller did not return a telephone message left at his office.

Oklahoma Gas and Electric Co. reported about 2,900 customers without power in the Shattuck area in northern Ellis County

Tornado warnings in Dewey, Woodward and Major counties expired without any reports of twisters touching down.

Tornadoes also struck Enid and Kremlin in northwestern Oklahoma late Saturday night and early Sunday, causing damage at an expo center in Enid.
