EDMOND — Edmond Public Schools has cancelled all sporting events and other activities originally scheduled for Friday night due to the threat of severe weather.
The National Weather Service in Norman reports that threats of hail, damaging wind, rain and potential tornados remains in effect until 10 p.m. tonight.
An official at National Weather Service headquarters reported a tornado passed through Norman at about 4:15 p.m.
The tornado traveled down State Highway 9 toward the local National Weather Center building.
The tornado passed north of the building and the University of Oklahoma campus.
Power flashes hit the Norman area about the same time, and officials reported downed powerlines in the area.
Tornadoes were rain-wrapped, making it difficult to spot them.
Meteorologists detected a “very strong rotation” on the radar at the time of the tornado report.
Local meteorologists of the National Weather Center could not be reached, as they took cover during the storm.
Phone lines at the local weather center remained busy at 4:45 p.m.
