EDMOND —
Northbound lanes of I-35 near 122nd Street likely will be closed through the end of rush hour due to a fatality crash involving two semi-trucks, a trooper said Friday afternoon.
Personnel from the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality and Oklahoma City’s Stormwater Quality Management Department are at the site of the crash, which occurred at about 1 p.m., said OHP Trooper Betsy Randolph.
For some reason, a semi traveling southbound on I-35 crossed over and collided with a semi traveling northbound, Randolph said. The driver of the semi traveling northbound was killed, and fluid from that truck spilled onto the highway, she said.
A sign crossing the highway was damaged when the truck traveling northbound struck a support pole, Randolph said. Part of the roadway also was damaged, she said.
The driver of the other semi, who did not appear to have suffered serious external injuries, was transported to a metro hospital, Randolph said.
Information on the identities of the drivers of the trucks was not immediately available, Randolph said. The southbound truck was a Haliburton tanker that was empty, she said. The northbound truck was a box trailer.
Several secondary crashes occurred, Randolph said.
Randolph urged motorists to take alternate routes, if possible, into early Friday evening and asked for their understanding after what was a tragic incident.

UPDATE: Tornado touches portions of Edmond
Roger Williams and his wife Shellie, residents in Edmond’s Thornbrooke neighborhood since 2004, were watching the weather reports Sunday as a large storm approached the city.
When they heard reports that a tornado was spotted near Broadway and 15th Street, then Broadway and 33rd Street, the couple and their son Ethan, 11, took cover in a reinforced interior closet. After they closed the door it got eerily quiet, like being in the eye of a hurricane, Roger said. As the tornado passed by, they could hear a few bangs outside.
“I was kind of scared,” Ethan said. -

A violent tornado ripped trees out of the ground as it dropped into southern Edmond late Sunday afternoon along areas east and west of Interstate 35 from 15th Street to 33rd Street, according to various reports. Sheriff’s office investigates bomb threat at county courthouse
A suspicious bag found inside a county building after a reported bomb threat contained trash, Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Mark Myers said.
Members of the Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office investigated the mid-day report of a bomb threat at the county courthouse in downtown Oklahoma City, Myers said.
