SLIDESHOW: Tornado strikes I-35 area of Edmond

EDMOND — A violent tornado ripped trees out of the ground as it dropped into southern Edmond late Sunday afternoon along areas east and west of Interstate 35 from 15th Street to 33rd Street, according to various reports. Damage in Edmond is confirmed by the city. Hail also peppered northwest Edmond during the violent storm event.

“There is damage, but we don’t know the severity,” said Matt Stillwell, director of Edmond Emergency Management. Damage reports were preliminary at 5 p.m.

“We have two patients here in our emergency room, but none of them are serious,” said Leslie Buford, spokeswoman for OU Medical Center-Edmond, which is at Second and Bryant.

Damage is reported at the new Mercy Edmond I-35 wellness center under construction near 15th Street and the interstate.

“There is roof damage to a large section of windows going across the front,” said Rachel Wright, Mercy spokesperson. “There’s flagpoles down and billboards down. The good thing is it is still under construction but nobody was here.”

A tornado warning was issued at about 4:30 p.m. for the vicinity of the Bryant and 33rd Street area. The tornado headed east to Arcadia Lake where it dissipated and reformed on the ground into a multiple vortex into the Luther area, according to reports. Injuries are feared in the Wellston area where news helicopters are showing large homes sustaining damage.

A tornado warning with large hail for Norman was issued for Norman at about 5:20 p.m. By 5:55 p.m., debris from a tornado touching down in east Norman was reported, with that storm headed to the north side of Lake Thunderbird.
