EDMOND —
Detectives are investigating Tuesday’s officer-involved shooting at a busy Edmond shopping area, trying to learn why a man refused to drop his gun, police said.
Police spokeswoman Glynda Chu said at about 11:41 a.m. the Edmond Police Department received a call about shots fired in the shopping area at East Second Street and Bryant Avenue. When an officer responded, he encountered a man armed with a gun in front of Los Arcos restaurant, 1718 E. Second St., Chu said.
At that time of day, the area is usually busy with customers and patrons going to and from stores and restaurants like Los Arcos.
Chu said the officer repeatedly ordered the man to drop the gun and the man did not comply, Chu said. During that time the man instead pointed the gun at the officer, Chu said. After a final refusal to comply, the officer shot the man once in his stomach, she said.
The man was taken by ambulance to OU Medical Center’s Presbyterian Tower, Chu said.
In front of the restaurant, behind taped off areas, investigators searched for clues and photographed the section of sidewalk on which several yellow evidence markers stood.
Chu said investigators don’t know why the man had the gun and why he pointed it at the officer. They have also been trying to get as many statements from witnesses as they could.
At about 4:30 p.m., updates were not available on the man’s condition, Chu said. The department did not release the identify of the man or the officer. Police would likely be able to provide some of that information Wednesday, Chu said.

UPDATE: Tornado touches portions of Edmond
Roger Williams and his wife Shellie, residents in Edmond’s Thornbrooke neighborhood since 2004, were watching the weather reports Sunday as a large storm approached the city.
When they heard reports that a tornado was spotted near Broadway and 15th Street, then Broadway and 33rd Street, the couple and their son Ethan, 11, took cover in a reinforced interior closet. After they closed the door it got eerily quiet, like being in the eye of a hurricane, Roger said. As the tornado passed by, they could hear a few bangs outside.
