Sheriff’s office investigates bomb threat at county courthouse

EDMOND — A suspicious bag found inside a county building after a reported bomb threat contained trash, Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Mark Myers said.

Members of the Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office investigated the mid-day report of a bomb threat at the county courthouse in downtown Oklahoma City, Myers said. The county bomb squad cleared the suspicious bag found inside an annex to the main county building, Myers said.

As a precaution a portion of the annex building was evacuated, Myers said. The area has been secured and the OCSO Bomb Squad responded to take a closer look at the suspicious bag, he said.

District 3 County Commissioner Ray Vaughn, of Edmond, said he and other staff members were away from the county building when word of the threat reached him. Vaughn said he called Oklahoma County Sheriff John Whetsel who told him the county building had been swept and all was clear there.

Some workers in the county building evacuated on their own, but there was no mandatory evacuation, Vaughn said. As part of the response, Oklahoma City officers closed streets adjacent to the buildings, Vaughn said.

Stay tuned for more information as it becomes available.
