That morning coffee run now can go more quickly at Emerald City Coffee, 1433 E. Danforth, which has brought the concept of a double drive through coffee stand to Edmond. The stand opened April 14.
It is owned and operated by three brothers, Jeff, Brian and Dan Harrington. Jeff and Brian own the stand and Dan manages the stand.
“My brothers and I grew up in Seattle and that’s the coffee capitol,” Dan said.
He said his brothers had talked about starting a coffee shop for a long time. Dan moved to Oklahoma three years ago to help manage two Quiznos so they chose Oklahoma for their first store. He said they hope to expand to other areas of Edmond.
“It was an opportunity because there are not a lot of free-standing drive thrus,” Dan said.
Brian first was introduced to the double drive thru concept five years ago when he lived in Oregon. Drive thru coffee shops sprouted up throughout the state.
“It’s kind of a neat concept because it helps with the rush in the morning,” Dan said.
After a lot of research, the brothers determined that 30,000 to 35,000 cars pass the intersection of Bryant and Danforth. In addition, the store is in the parking lot of the shopping center that contains a fitness facility.
Dan was trained by a student of Alex Fisenko, an Italian widely known as the “godfather of espresso.”
The coffee shop serves a variety of coffee drinks, smoothies and Italian soda. Emerald City originals include the Emerald City Dream, a caramel vanilla latte, and the Fog Lifter, which includes four shots of espresso. Another popular drink is the German Chocolate, which consists of chocolate, caramel and coconut.
Customers have the option of five smoothies, including strawberry banana, and four berry smoothies, which are made with 100 percent fruit and a soy-based vanilla powder.
Sierra Waldrop, an employee, said they even make their own whipped cream by adding coconut and vanilla to heavy whipping cream.
They use Ghirardelli chocolate and whole milk in their drink products and their espresso is made with a six bean blend.
“We’re trying to use higher quality products to accommodate the customer,” Dan said.
For fitness fanatics, the coffee stand also offers energy boosts, protein and skim milk. Customers also can enjoy muffins, pastries and bagels. All coffee is served hot, over ice or as a frozen blend. Children’s drinks include “kid coffee” (hot cocoa) or cold kid shakes.
Emerald City Coffee is open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and closed Sunday. For more information, call 340-7222.
