Oklahoma City-based Wavelinx has received Federal Communications Commission approval to expand the next generation of wireless broadband technology throughout the state.
The FCC will allow Wavelinx to implement Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX), the new wireless standard.
One of the first WiMAX network in the state will be deployed in the Deer Creek and Piedmont areas.
Specifically, WiMAX is a second generation of wireless broadband telecommunications technology that makes more efficient use of bandwidth, provides data over longer distances currently available, limits interference and achieves greater system stability, said Wavelinx president Todd Segress, of Edmond.
For WiMAX users, the advantage is a greater coverage area due to less interference and greater power output.
Wavelinx serves 33 communities in Oklahoma and Texas using fixed-point wireless technology. Unlike Wi-Fi, fixed wireless service creates a secure link to equipment at a customer’s home or business.
Wavelinx plans to expand its WiMAX coverage to 25 service areas throughout the state, said Segress, accomplished through acquisition and network expansion.
