Council seeks teachers for personal finance program

EDMOND — The Oklahoma Council on Economic Education has launched a new Master Teacher in Personal Financial Literacy program designed to increase professional expertise in all areas covered by Oklahoma’s Personal Financial Literacy standards.

OCEE is now accepting applications from Oklahoma public school educators with some experience in providing classroom instruction in personal financial literacy. Applications are due by Friday.

The MTPFL program will develop a cadre of highly-qualified teachers to conduct teacher workshops, make presentations at teacher conferences and assist in the development of curriculum and other activities to help teachers and school districts successfully implement Oklahoma’s new PASSport to Personal Financial Literacy.

Participants will be selected based on criteria such as current involvement in providing classroom instruction in personal financial literacy, holding an Oklahoma secondary certification in one or more areas of instruction, and willingness and ability to be actively involved in providing workshops or training to other educators.

Individuals participating in the OCEE MTPFL training program will receive copies of a variety of teacher resources to engage students in learning activities, in-depth training in topics related to the Oklahoma PASSport to Personal Financial Literacy, reimbursement to cover any “out of pocket” expenses such as travel, district reimbursement for substitutes and opportunities to collaborate with other teachers implementing the Personal Financial Literacy standards in their classrooms.

Upon successful completion of the training program, participants will receive special designation as a Master Teacher in Personal Financial Literacy, a $1,500 stipend, and offers to work with OCEE on a contractual basis to conduct teacher training.

Program participants will be required to meet requirements in the 2009-10 academic year to successfully complete the program and receive the “Master Teacher” designation. Participants must receive permission from their principals or other designated supervisors as part of the application process.

The PASSport to Financial Literacy Act of 2007 requires all students graduating in 2014 to successfully complete 14 areas of instruction in personal finance. OCEE is the organization designated by the state legislature to assist the Oklahoma State Department of Education in providing teacher training for personal finance.
