Small Business Saturday kicks off Nov. 30

EDMOND — Mayor Charles Lamb plans to declare Nov. 30 as Small Business Saturday during the regular City Council meeting Monday.

Shopping local is a great way to support the Edmond community by reinvesting a resident’s money here. Sales tax revenue is the bedrock for funding city services, Lamb said.

“Small business is the cornerstone of our free enterprise system and since the birth of this country has represented opportunity, independence and the fulfillment of dreams for generations of Americans,” he said.

Small Business Saturday is one of the busiest shopping days of of the year. It is a counterpart to Black Friday and Cyber Monday, which features big box retail and e-commerce stores.

“I think it’s great that they have this day to bring customers to small businesses,” said Elena Listen, marketing manager for the Downtown Edmond Business Association.

The majority of retail advertising is usually done by larger nationally known chain stores, Listen said. Small Business Saturday gives people another reason to see what smaller retail shops have to offer, she added.

Listen said she likes the sense of community in downtown Edmond. The shop owners care about keeping Edmond a vibrant community, she said.

Many small business owners juggle family and career by working long business hours and promoting volunteerism, Lamb said.

Small Business Saturday is designed to help all small business owners in Edmond to prosper while supporting the local economy, said Brooke Roshell, information specialist at the Edmond Area Chamber of Commerce.

“The majority of our membership is small businesses,” Roshell said.
