EDMOND — A rezoning permit to build a Verizon Wireless telecommunications tower north of Coffee Creek Road and east of Midwest Boulevard was approved 5-0 this week by the Edmond City Council. The property is zoned general agricultural.

“They are needing 2,500-square-feet of land for the tower,” said Bob Schiermeyer, city planner.

The 180-foot tower would be on a 10-acre tract, Schiermeyer said. Such towers are usually 130 feet tall, but the extra height would allow additional carriers to utilize the transmission benefit, he added. City ordinance allows for three carriers to co-exist per tower.

There is an existing driveway on this property, Schiermeyer said. The area would be secured with barbed wired on a chain-link fence.

“The Planning Commission recommended approval,” Schiermeyer said.

There were concerns about water run-off along Coffee Creek Road. Verizon Wireless volunteered to correct drainage issues along Coffee Creek by regrading and replacing a ditch.
