Physically active since high school, Denise Springer has traveled many roads of working out before coming to the peaceful place of yoga.
The owner of You Power Yoga, as well as one of the instructors, has opened her studio in Edmond on Second Street.
“When my youngest son developed an interest in Tae Kwon Do, I joined with him. He quit after a year and a half and I stayed on for seven years earning my second-degree black belt with Grand Master Jin Young Kim (Dragon Kim’s in Edmond). An unrelated neck injury ended the fun of jumping, spinning and kicking and introduced me to the joy of yoga.”
Springer said yoga is for people of all ages, sizes and fitness levels and modifications are provided on an individual basis.
“Yoga is a strengthening and lengthening form of exercise,” Springer said. “The physical aspect of yoga is that it increases and develops cardiovascular strength. In every pose, even the simplest, most of your muscles are engaged.”
The new, spacious studio offers bamboo flooring, low lights and calming sounds during the heated and non-heated classes. Eclectic play lists are used to move through the practice with energy to spare.
All Level and Vinyasa Flow classes are taught at 85 degrees F. Yoga for Kids, Beginner and Larger Body classes for those who are curve friendly are not heated, and the first class is free.
“The 85-degree heat is perfect for gaining cardiovascular strength and generating a detoxifying sweat,” Springer said. “Warm muscles mean a safer practice. The warmth helps you burn calories, generate a healthy sweat, release tension, and build flexibility, strength and focus.”
At You Power Yoga you know you are in a safe environment.
“The fact that we offer heated, not hot, classes is unique. You get the benefits of a warm room without the exhaustion that a very hot room can occasionally make you feel,” said instructor Andrea Chaves.
Springer said yoga helps people connect and helps them learn to be in the moment.
“In our frenetic society we are constantly multitasking,” Springer said. “We need to learn to slow down. The busier you are the more you need to learn to slow down.”
Instructor Kate Darafeyeva said, “At You Power Yoga, you don’t have to be a former gymnast to feel comfortable in class. Our professional, skilled instructors will help you work at your own level, whether you are an advanced practitioner or you just heard about yoga a week ago.”
Darafeyeva will be teaching Yoga for Kids classes (ages 5-12) among others. “Kids are natural learners, and they make you see the world from a different point of view, one that is fresh and free of expectations,” Darafeyeva said. “Kids live in the moment.”
