Pelco wins international award

EDMOND — Pelco Products Inc. recently received recognition from the Institute of Industrial Engineers with second place honors in the annual Lean Best Practice Award competition at its annual conference in Orlando, Fla. The award, open to all companies worldwide with employees who are members of IIE, recognizes the best of those organizations from all industries that use lean manufacturing or lean enterprise as a process improvement methodology.

Pelco Products Inc. was honored with a second place finish for its innovative process improvement practices in its warehousing operations. Utilizing lean manufacturing concepts, Pelco was able to reduce inventory costs by more than $537,000 and reduced annual labor costs by $93,600, all while improving the quality of employees’ order fill rate by nearly 33 percent.

Pelco’s project, presented at the annual IIE international conference in May, included four lean process improvement events that reduced the daily past due order rate from an average of 76 per day to an average of eight per day. This 89.5 percent improvement in the past due order totals has resulted in higher customer satisfaction, while also raising the expectations of Pelco’s customers.

As a finalist, with a total employee count of just 150 employees, Pelco was awarded second place competing against three other finalist companies with staffing levels of 9,900 to more than 24,000 employees. Pelco also was named a finalist for the award in 2011, and with this recognition in 2012 is the only two-time finalist in the history of the IIE Lean Best Practice competition.

Pelco Products Inc. is a family owned business specializing in the design and manufacturing of traffic hardware, utility products and decorative lighting. Pelco Products Inc. sells products in all 50 states and multiple international markets.
