Mercy Clinic opens inside Walmart
EDMOND —
Edmond residents have a new patient advocate in the neighborhood, and according to some, it is the best kept secret in town.
Mercy Hospital has brought The Clinic at Walmart Operated by Mercy to Walmart at Santa Fe and Danforth as it launches its first retail clinic in Edmond.
“The partnership we now have with Walmart will allow us to provide accessible, convenient, high-quality care to people who may not have a primary care physician,” said Dr. James Dixson, president of Primary Care Mercy Physicians at Mercy Physicians-West Communities.
“This will give us endless opportunities to refer patients who visit The Clinic at Walmart to a Mercy physician.”
With a motto of “Take the care to the people,” the staff at The Clinic at Walmart opened the clinic July 7, and so far they have seen 90 patients.
“We’re really capturing those people who don’t have primary care,” said Bobbie Beirne, clinic manager. “We’re seeing people from all walks of life, from people who don’t have time to see a doctor to people who have gone a long time without care.”
With affordable prices posted at the entrance, there is no second guessing as to how much a visit is going to cost.
“I see people come up here and look at our price board and say, ‘Sixty-five dollars, I can afford that,’” said Tammy Harrelson, assistant registered nurse practitioner.
“We also are especially good for those days when the kids are sick and your primary doctor can’t get you in, or you have just moved to town and need to see a doctor and you don’t know where to go,” said Meghan Nelson, physician’s assistant.
“Through the clinic we can send the patient to After Hours on Memorial and Eastern if additional care is needed or directly to the emergency room at Mercy Hospital, saving the patient time. Once you come through the clinic you are now in the Mercy System and you can be referred to a Mercy Physicians Primary Care Clinic location,” she said.
The patients aren’t just shuffled in and out, Nelson said.
“We’re not just ‘treating and streeting’ them, as they say,” Beirne said. “If someone comes in for a sore throat and we notice they have high blood pressure, we don’t just send them on their way. We try to educate them as to what their options are with further care, such as setting an appointment with a physician.”
The Clinic at Walmart, at 2200 W. Danforth Road, has two medical assistants, two assistant registered nurse practitioners and a physician assistant on staff.
All patients must be older than 18 months. Services are walk-in only; no appointments will be accepted. All clinicians are licensed advanced practice nurses or physician assistants working under a doctor’s supervision.
Mercy has designed a team model of care, which rotates the APN or PA providers between the Mercy primary care clinic and The Clinic at Walmart Operated by Mercy, and there is access to Mercy’s new electronic health record.
Doctors are leading the way into new service sites across the community including Dr. Jesse Campbell at Mercy Health Santa Fe, Dr. Frank Davis at Mercy Health Westbrook and Dr. Ted Webb at Mercy Health Northwest Family.
The clinic is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from noon until 6 p.m. Sunday. An additional clinic is scheduled to open in August at 2000 W. Memorial Road in Oklahoma City.
For treatment of common illnesses including bronchitis, earaches, pink eye, seasonal allergies, skin ailments, sinus infection, sore throat, upset stomach and urinary tract infections, a clinic visit will cost $65.
Stay well services range from $20 to $75. Other services offered include tobacco cessation, diabetes management and weight management. Cash, checks and most major credit cards are accepted as well as numerous insurance plans.
