Edmond QR company scores $5,000 prize

EDMOND — Eric Richardson’s concern for his mother’s medical issues ignited a business plan that won Get Started OKC, an event for entrepreneurs, and will help others who are concerned for a loved one’s health and safety.

Cox Business presented Get Started OKC to Oklahoma City in partnership with Inc. Magazine to support and encourage the success of local entrepreneurship.

The event earlier this week highlighted eight businesses who pitched their business plan to three judges. Each judge was selected because they excel in four areas that are essential for a business: investment, marketing, business management and social media. The four judges were Josh Linkner, a venture capitalist from Detroit, digital marketing leader Ann Handley and successful CEO and Inc. 5000 winner Phil G. Busey Sr., who is an Edmond resident and founder, chairman, and CEO of The Busey Group of Companies. Eric Markowitz from Inc. Magazine hosted the event.

Richardson, also an Edmond resident, was named winner with his business ScanMed QR. ScanMed QR received a $5,000 Cox Business technology package.

Richardson’s company has developed and produced the world’s first Quick Response-based medical alert product that can be sold in retail stores worldwide. ScanMed QR has been able to improve the process of sharing medical information and important data to healthcare and emergency responders regardless of location.

“Get Started OKC was an incredibly beneficial event on a number of levels,” Richardson said. “Having the ability to interact with other Oklahoma entrepreneurs and hearing how their products and services are helping to grow a number of industries was incredible, and having the rare one-on-one experience and getting extremely insightful guidance and tips from industry veterans was invaluable. As a medical alert technology company, the $5,000 technology makeover provided by Cox Business will undoubtedly help our company grow to the next level.”

ScanMed QR gives consumers the ability to manage and edit their own personal health information that is contained in their QR image. The QR image can be branded on an unlimited assortment of preferred products, such as ID cards, key tags, stickers, sports bands, etc., where their information can be accessed using the globally available QR format that’s currently found on millions of electronic products worldwide.

“ScanMed QR along with the other seven competing businesses have unique and viable business concepts,” said Randy Chandler, vice president of Cox Business Oklahoma. “Our goal was to help drive these businesses forward with expert advice while shining a spotlight on the hot bed of entrepreneurship here in Oklahoma.”

While the official winner of Get Started OKC has been named, there’s still time to vote for the People’s Choice winner. The top eight business pitches are featured on GetstartedOKC.com for people to vote online. The winner of the People’s Choice will receive a profile on Cox Business’ social destination and one-on-one consulting time with Busey. The People’s Choice voting will close March 12 at 11:59 p.m. EST.
