A variance was approved 5-0 this week by the Planning Commission to place a ground sign on a utility easement. However, the applicant, Dr. Damon Johnson will need to receive permission from ONG about placing the sign over one of their lines, said Bob Schiermeyer, city planner.
Johnson, a dentist, has chosen a 32-square-foot sign to be placed at 1400 W. Covell Road. He wants the sign to be readable at right angles to communicate with passersby, Scheirmeyer said.
The sign would be 7 feet tall when including a base feature. The diamond-shaped portion of the sign would be only 5 feet, 3 inches in height, Schiermeyer said.
Placement of the sign follows the standard used at Uptown Grocery that allowed access over a utility easement, Schiermeyer said. The difference is that the Uptown Grocery sign was only over a sewer utility.
“While the sign is located in the utility easement, the owners are planning to construct the sign so it can be disassembled from the base for work needed in the utility easement,” Schiermeyer stated in his notes.
Signtech Manager Ryan Codding said the arch of the sign would allow eight bolts to be disengaged at ground level within a day.
“We want to develop a sign that is in taste with the artwork that is already on (Johnson’s) property,” Codding said. “We feel like this does that very well.”
