Pelco open house to celebrate National Manufacturing Day

Factory tour to raise awareness of career options

EDMOND — Pelco Products Inc. will have an open house at its manufacturing facility at 320 W. 18th St., to celebrate National Manufacturing Day on Oct. 5.

Pelco is an Oklahoma-based, family-owned business specializing in the design and manufacture of traffic signal hardware, utility products and decorative outdoor lighting. With more than 150 employees, it is the largest traffic signal hardware manufacturer in the nation. The open house will allow visitors a behind-the-scenes look at the manufacturing process.

Pelco’s manufacturing open house will be on National Manufacturing Day, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 5. Those wishing to attend should call 340-3434 to reserve a time. Tours will last 30 to 45 minutes and will be conducted every 30 minutes.

Manufacturing Day has been designed by the National Association of Manufacturers to expand knowledge about and improve general public perception of manufacturing careers and manufacturing’s value to the U.S. economy. Manufacturing Day is for students, parents, educators, media, customers, suppliers and the community at large. Visitors will learn about real career opportunities, training and resources.

Studies by the nonprofit Manufacturing Institute and others show that almost 80 percent of Americans believe manufacturing is important to our economic prosperity, standard of living and national security. Yet only 30 percent would encourage their children to go into manufacturing as a career.

Employing its own integrated powder coating facility, as well as wet-painting, Pelco is able to provide customized product finishes. The company also adopted the disciplines of Lean Manufacturing in which continuous improvements throughout the organization provide rapid customer response, shortened lead times and improved product quality.  Pelco Products Inc. has become the standard for products that are superior in design, quality and cost effectiveness.

Manufacturing Day is sponsored by the Fabricators & Manufactures Association International, the U.S. Commerce Department’s Hollings Manufacturing Extension Partnership, the National Association of Manufacturers and The Manufacturing Institute and supported by dozens of other national and regional manufacturing organizations.
