For the past 25 years, Debbie McFarlin has been sharing her love for flowers at her store Kickingbird Flowers & Gifts in Edmond and she hopes to continue that tradition for many years to come.
“I always liked the flower business and the gift business,” McFarlin said. “Flowers have been a longtime symbol of love and caring and make people happy and it gives them a positive affect on their emotions and their moods.”
McFarlin said it is an honor for the store to reach the 25-year mark.
“I’m proud of this business and for myself for sticking in there,” McFarlin said. “It does help to have good employees. I couldn’t have done it without my employees and my family.”
Kickingbird Flowers & Gifts offers a wide variety of flowers and gifts, including blooming flowers, silk flowers, plants, home and holiday decorations, jewelry, paper products, stuffed animals, candles, kitchen items, bags and purses to name a few.
“Whatever I like at market, I get it,” McFarlin said.
The store, which officially celebrated its 25th anniversary on Oct. 3, has seen many changes since it first opened its doors in 1988.
When the store first opened, McFarlin’s staff included one designer, one employee and one driver. Today, McFarlin’s staff includes a full-time manager, who is her daughter, two designers, two salespeople and two drivers. McFarlin said the store hires more drivers around the holidays as well.
The store has remained at its same location, 1251 E. Danforth Road in Edmond, ever since it opened its doors. However, the store was expanded in 1993 when the shop next to McFarlin’s became available.
“We needed more cooler space and more work area,” McFarlin said as her shop grew. “We got it, then we were really doing well. The market was pretty good then, too.”
McFarlin said their key to successful business is due to its loyal customers they have maintained throughout the years.
“Without customers, we wouldn’t be where we are today,” McFarlin said.
McFarlin’s daughter, Kim, who has worked for the store for 13 years, said longtime customers and longtime employees have made Kickingbird Flowers & Gifts what it is today.
“We want to thank our customers,” Kim McFarlin said. “We owe it to them.”
As for the future of the business, Debbie McFarlin said she hopes to continue to work for as long as possible.
“I hope it continues to grow and prosper,” McFarlin said. “I want to work as long as I can and keep the business in the family. I hope to pass it on to my daughter or granddaughter.”
