PR firm acts as walking billboards
A new marketing and public relations firm gives its clients the option to pay for a logo on their T-shirts, which they wear around town everyday.
Leslie Tefteller and Julie Holbrook started Practical Marketing Solutions in February.
“Our ideal business is small businesses that want to grow. We are using our practical experience. We both have training and education,” Tefteller said.
Holbrook has worked in the public relations and marketing fields since 1989 and Tefteller has 13 years of experience in human resources management and 11 years experience in marketing.
The two women met last year at an Edmond Area Chamber of Commerce event. Tefteller was passing out cards for a personal training business and Holbrook took that as an opportunity to follow her and pass out cards for a chiropractor she was representing.
“We both worked for other companies and did this on the side,” Tefteller said.
She said they have been able to bring in more clients together than individually. After only one month of business, PMS already represents about eight local businesses.
“I know that my relational skills in talking with people is what drives me,” Tefteller said.
She said they are not following the mold of many marketing companies that herd as many clients in and out as they can.
“We want personal relationships,” Holbrook said.
They get to know clients and their reputations before they agree to represent them, Tefteller said.
“I really like people. I love meeting people. I love helping people,” Holbrook said.
They would rather grow slowly and a have a strong foundation than arbitrarily taking on anybody and everybody.
“I think one of the most important messages we convey to our customers is we’re ethically based,” Tefteller said. “We don’t take on any client we don’t believe in because we want to market them to everyone.”
She said one reason they chose the acronym is that PMS is eye catching and several people walk across rooms just to read their T-shirts. They wanted to avoid a name that was too serious and did not explain what they do, Tefteller said.
Holbrook said people also ask about the businesses on the back of the shirts. She said they also carry business cards of all their clients at all times so when people ask about a business they have information on hand.
PMS sets up trade fairs for clients or represents clients at trade fairs and offers a human resources aspect, which includes teaching clients how to interview, hire, terminate and review employee performances. Tefteller said they also teach diversity training.
“You find out what the need for the company is and you meet that need,” she said.
PMS is having a Health and Beauty fair from 1-5 p.m. April 17 at 180 Personal Training. Holbrooks said they have about 15 health- and beauty-related businesses signed up to participate in this public event but are looking for about 15 more.
