EDMOND — McBride Orthopedic Hospital ranked in top 5 percent of hospitals nationwide

McBride Orthopedic Hospital was recently ranked in the top 5 percent in the nation for Overall Orthopedic Services and Joint Replacement in a new study released by HealthGrades, a leading independent health care ratings organization. The study evaluates objective patient outcomes in the nation’s 5,000 hospitals.

McBride Orthopedic Hospital received HealthGrades Specialty Excellence Awards for Orthopedic Surgery and Joint Replacement for 2010. In addition, McBride received five-star ratings for Spine Surgery and Hip Fracture Repair.

The HealthGrades study, the largest annual report of its kind, analyzed patient outcomes in nearly 40 million Medicare hospitalization records from 5,000 hospitals over the years 2006, 2007 and 2008. The study also showed that if all hospitals performed at a five-star level, more than 110,000 orthopedic in-hospital complications could have been avoided among Medicare patients over the three years studied.

Small Business Development Center offers seminar on Skype

The University of Central Oklahoma-based Small Business Development Center (SBDC) will offer a seminar about how to use the online calling program Skype from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Edmond Area Chamber of Commerce, 825 E. Second St.

Susan Urbach, regional director for SBDC, said Skype provides businesses with a free or very low cost option for communicating with clients and customers, and businesses can also gain valuable face time with clients instead of traveling long distances to meet up.

Skype is a Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP), which is a way of calling people from a computer, and can be used with a Web cam if desired.

The seminar costs $29 and is limited to five participants. Participants should arrive at the seminar by 6:15 to sign in.

Participants should bring their laptop. SBDC will provide a laptop for use during the seminar for those without one.

Additional time will be allowed following the presentation for participants to set up their own Skype account so it will be ready to use when they leave.
