EDMOND —
Chicken finger lovers passing by the Raising Cane’s restaurant under construction down the street from the University of Central Oklahoma can practically taste the premium tenderloins, crinkle-cut fries, Texas Toast, sweet tea and, of course, that secret recipe Cane’s sauce already.
Fortunately, they won’t have to let their imaginations do the work much longer. Cane’s is set to open its first restaurant in Edmond at 10 a.m. Thursday.
The Edmond location at 1225 East Second St. will be Cane’s first restaurant in the Edmond area, the fourthin Oklahoma, and the 136th overall across 17 states.
General Manager Jared Dunn is just as eager to open his doors as the rest of us.
“The whole Edmond and UCO community has been buzzing about the new Cane’s for weeks,” Dunn said.
Raising Cane’s is in the midst of a rapid expansion across Oklahoma and other states. The company is a recognized industry leader in customer service and is distinguished by its generous support of the communities it serves.
Dunn and his crewmembers worked Sept. 14 at the HOPE Center of Edmond, stocking the food pantry and folding donated clothes. The center was developed by the Edmond Ministerial Alliance, an inter-denominational council of churches.
“Active support in our local communities is a huge part of Raising Cane’s corporate DNA, so you’ll be seeing us getting heavily involved in Edmond’s schools and nonprofit organizations over the coming months and years,” Dunn said.
A grand opening ribbon-cutting ceremony will be conducted at the restaurant at 9:45 a.m. Thursday, in conjunction with the Edmond Area Chamber of Commerce.
Doors will open to the public at 10 a.m. The first 100 paying dine-in customers will receive a commemorative Edmond Cane’s T-shirt, along with a voucher for a free Box Combo that may be redeemed on a subsequent visit. The voucher is not valid on opening day. In many expansion markets, customers camp out overnight to be among the first to enjoy Cane’s offerings.
Between Sept. 20-27, Edmond customers also will be invited to participate in the company’s “Give Back Giveaway” tradition, in which one customer will win a $1,000 donation to his or her local charity of choice, along with a special prize relating to a guest appearance by a high-profile Oklahoma celebrity planned at the restaurant for Sept. 27. In keeping with Cane’s philosophy of being involved with the communities in which it operates, Raising Cane’s also set up a free lemonade stand in the main lobby of Chesapeake Energy’s headquarters office on Sept. 12, to introduce itself to one of Edmond’s largest employers.

The Association of Fundraising Professionals will celebrate National Philanthropy Day on Oct. 31 at the Skirvin Hotel in Oklahoma City. AFP is also celebrating 30 years of recognizing philanthropic leadership in Central Oklahoma. They are seeking nominations in one of the following nine categories: Fundraising professional, volunteer fundraiser, corporation, philanthropist, foundation, outstanding philanthropic service organization, outstanding achievement in diversity, outstanding fundraising organization and outstanding youth making a difference. Last year Heidi Russell of Edmond received the Mike McDonald Outstanding Fundraising Professional Award. Paul Folger with KOCO News was the emcee and he presented Russell with the award.

Local dentist leads national group
Dr. W. Scott Waugh was elected as the president of the American College of Dentists for 2013 as part of the College’s 92nd Annual Meeting and Convocation in San Francisco.
He is the first Oklahoman to be selected and will serve for one year, traveling throughout the United States and visiting other state’s dental associations and dental schools while representing the American Dental College.
Waugh was the recipient of the Oklahoma Dentist of the Year Award in 2009. In addition he has received The Thomas Jefferson Award and Dan Brannin awards from the Oklahoma Dental Association. He has served as president of the Oklahoma Dental Association and Oklahoma County Dental Association. He has practiced family dentistry in Edmond for more than 39 years. -
