Waterboarding has no place in our 'toolbox'

The Edmond Sun

EDMOND Reports during the weekend that the White House plans to veto the House-approved intelligence bill bodes ill for our standing in the world.

The bill seeks to ban several forms of interrogation methods, including forcing detainees to be naked, perform sexual acts or pose in a sexual manner; placing hoods or sacks over detainees’ heads or taping their eyes shut; beating, shocking or burning detainees, threatening them with military dogs; exposing them to extreme heat or cold; conducting mock executions; depriving them of food, water or medical care; and waterboarding, according to the Associated Press.

Sen. John McCain, R-Arizona, is this nation’s foremost expert on military torture, and his stance on waterboarding is that it’s unacceptable of a civilized nation to practice. We think the powers that be should listen to McCain on this matter.

Some would argue that if dealing with someone like the Sept. 11 terrorists, then we should not deprive our interrogators of any “tool in the toolbox.” The problem with that argument is it makes us no different than the terrorist.

If we’re willing to use any means necessary to gain information — and most information gained by torture is dubious, history has shown — then what does that say about this nation’s morals?

We have to remember that our government sets an example in everything that it does — for good or for ill. What happens if our nation tortures an innocent person? What happens when someone decides to take justice into their own hands and says if waterboarding is a good method for our government, then they should get to use it, too?

If we accept waterboarding as a means of information gathering, then all of our military families must be prepared to accept that another nation might use that same tactic on their son or daughter. That’s a chilling thought.
