UCO cheerleading squad wins national title

EDMOND — The University of Central Oklahoma’s large co-ed cheerleading squad won the national championship at the National Cheer Association/National Dance Alliance Collegiate Championships in Daytona, Fla., April 9-11.

The squad, coached by David Owens, bested 17 collegiate teams from throughout the country to win the title.

UCO’s small co-ed cheerleading squad, also coached by Owens, came two-tenths of a point shy of a national championship of its own, placing second to Hawaii Pacific University.

The UCO Dance Team, coached by Melissa Linduff, also placed well in the competition, finishing ninth in its division.

“We couldn’t be more proud of our cheer and dance teams. They represented the university with class and talent, personifying UCO’s core values of character, civility and community to the entire country,” said Jordan Smith, coordinator of Campus Activities and Events.

UCO’s cheer and dance teams have won six national titles since 2002.

The 2008 championships will be broadcast on Fox Sports Net April 26 and 29. Check local listings for times.
