EDMOND — A Specific Use Permit to include a site plan was approved 5-0 by the City Council this week for Highland Park Baptist Church, located on the northeast corner of Blackwelder and Ayers.

“Highland Park Baptist Church has been located at Blackwelder and Ayers for over 42 years. The church is adding seating for a new sanctuary, removing some existing structures and adding parking and a new building,” said Bob Schiermeyer, city planner.

The brick and stone veneer church will seat 264 people, with 88 parking spaces, Schiermeyer said. Thirty new parking spaces will be added. The architect for the project will be Thomas Small.

Councilwoman Elizabeth Waner asked if there is a drainage issue that would impact the Kingston addition. Engineering requirements for drainage standards have been met, Schiermeyer said. A detention pond will be placed east of the church in the historic path of water run-off, said Steve Manek, city engineer.
