Maurices aids animal shelter with Rescues & Runways

EDMOND — Local fashion is coming to the aid of Edmond’s homeless animals. Maurices in Edmond will participate in a new company-wide program, Rescues & Runways, throughout September to benefit Edmond Animal Welfare.

“Nationally, our goal is to have our 700 stores in 44 states collect one-half million pounds of pet food and supplies by Sept. 30,” said Kristina Vernon, assistant manager of the local store. Responding to the needs of the Edmond Animal Shelter, Vernon said Maurices will collect Purina kitten chow, puppy chow and kitty litter at its Bryant Square shopping center location, 520 S. Bryant. Everyone who makes a donation will receive a store coupon.

The local store also plans to host a fall fashion show Sept. 12 at the Downtown Community Center, 28 E. Main St. “Our goal with the fashion show is to raise awareness and bring our community together for a great cause,” said Kate Timbrook, manager. The two are recruiting volunteer models from among their best customers’ families. Avon, also in Bryant Square, has volunteered to apply the models’ make-up.

“Our top 100 customers will want to be there. They’ll want to see the latest fall fashions. Pets are involved. What woman doesn’t love a pet?” Vernon asked. She said they’ll provide children’s activities while their parents watch the fashion show, spend time at booths and visit with the animals.

Edmond Animal Welfare will bring adoptable dogs and cats, as well as adoption information, to the fashion show to help families prepare for bringing a new pet into their lives. PETCO also will have a booth with information on pet care, Vernon said. “Our mission is to put pets in loving homes,” she said.

At the fashion show, Maurices will auction baskets of gift cards from local businesses, with the money raised going to Paws for Life Inc., a charitable organization working in conjunction with the shelter.

The parent company also will provide a minimum donation of $50,000 to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

In the middle of September, Maurices will sell bracelets with animal charms for $5, with half the proceeds going to the ASPCA.

TO VISIT with the animals available for adoption, come to the Edmond Animal Shelter at 2424 Old Timbers Drive, on the southeast corner of Interstate 35 and Covell Road, or call Edmond Animal Welfare, 216-7615. The shelter is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

  • What if Jesus were president?

It is painful to listen to Democrats and Republicans attack each other. One hundred years ago, Helen Keller called the Democrats and Republicans Twiddle Dee and Twiddle Dum. Today it’s more like Dumb and Dumber. They assume that we are stupid and that we only care about ourselves. The test of whether the economy is doing well is whether consumer spending is up.

Once again, the American Baha’i Community including Baha’is from the Oklahoma City metro area are calling on Congress for help in the case of the seven imprisoned Baha’is of Iran.
The international Baha’i community was outraged at the news of the 20-year sentence for the seven Baha’i leaders which was just recently confirmed. The five men and two women imprisoned were arrested in May 2008 and later falsely charged with “spying for foreigners,” as well as “spreading corruption on Earth” and “cooperating with Israel.”

Q: We have a new black cocker spaniel puppy at our house — very cute. The last four dogs that we had were cockers also — and all of them had ear problems off and on most of their lives. I want to avoid that this time if at all possible. Can you recommend something? — Leslie T.

  • Memories form coffee’s bond

“How about we run over to Easy Stop and have us a coffee,” my Texas acclimated husband would occasionally suggest. Quaint, I’d be thinking as I slipped on my shoes. Not “a cup of coffee.” Just “coffee.” I envisioned that dark, hot brew standing upright on the tabletop between us, unsupported by a cup, liquid defying the laws of gravity. But I generally went with him.
