Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts team together for Hugs Project

Special to The Sun

EDMOND — Members of Girl Scout Troop 177, Girl Scout Community Service Team 640 of West Edmond and Deer Creek and the local Edmond and Deer Creek Boy Scouts are inviting community members to join in an afternoon of craft making and supply organization for the Hugs Project.

From 2:30-5:30 p.m. Sunday area residents are invited to “Come and Go” at the Church of the Servant Community Center, 14343 N. MacArthur Blvd. in Oklahoma City.

They will be joining forces with The Hugs Project, a 501(c)3 nonprofit group, which sends care packages to deployed service men and women.

The Hugs Project’s goal is to have 5,000 ornaments ready to send out in care packages this year by Oct. 1, to reach troops by the holidays, said Melissa Beck, Girl Scout CST 640 Manager.

“Scouts are dedicated to helping them with that mission,” Beck said. “Please stop by and make an ornament with us. We will provide craft supplies.”

Beck said individuals may bring their own craft supplies or non-breakable ornaments if they are made at a troop meeting also.

Hugs Project boxes also will be filled.

“We were told from the Hugs Project that beef jerky is always the biggest need and a huge request from our troops so feel free to bring your favorite kind to ship to them,” Beck said.

Other items needed for the care packages include: postage for boxes, “HUGS” cool ties to go around the neck (made to THP specifications), travel size bug repellent, travel size sunscreen, chap stick (preferably with SPF in it), socks, Band-Aids/first aid kits, small sewing kits, 3-blade razors, non aerosol shave gel and deodorant, toothbrushes and toothpaste, travel size soap/shampoo/conditioner, travel size lotion and body wash, Q-tips, small brushes and combs, black hair ties, nail clippers, travel size Kleenex, various card games (like UNO), comedy books, magazines, salted nuts, peanut butter, crackers, canned food (meat, tuna, fruit, pastas), canned soups and can openers.

“If you don’t have time to join us, but would still like to help, we will need boxes to put all donations in,” Beck said.
