EDMOND —
Edmond students soon could be more financially fit thanks to a program sponsored by Citizens Bank of Edmond.
The bank is providing Edmond Public Schools with a web-based supplemental curriculum to help reinforce financial concepts currently being taught in the district’s middle schools and high schools.
“Today’s students live in a fast-paced, digital world,” said Citizens Bank of Edmond’s Chief Credit Officer Jill Castilla. “But, no matter how much technology advances, basic principles like spending, earning, borrowing and lending do not change. This program aims to help teachers convey important monetary concepts to students in a way that is interesting and engaging.”
A web-based educational curriculum, the program interactively introduces financial concepts and skills to students with video, animation, 3-D gaming, avatars and social networking platforms. Citizens Bank of Edmond is providing these supplemental educational materials at no cost to the school district.
“These students will be heading to college, vocational schools or the workforce very soon,” said Castilla, who serves on the board of directors for the Oklahoma Council on Economic Education. “For the first time, some students will be considering school loans, credit scores, taxes and credit cards, things that can impact their lives for years to come. We want them to be prepared to make wise decisions so they don’t jeopardize their financial futures just as their adult lives are beginning.”
“The mission of the Edmond Public Schools is ‘Empowering all students to succeed in a changing society,’” said Linda Sloan, CareerTech specialist and online facilitator for Edmond Public Schools. “We see providing financial information and tools as essential components in helping students with their overall success. We continue to reinforce sound financial strategies in several of our courses to help improve retention of the information. Students appreciate that they can have fun while learning the program and know that it is going to benefit them now and in the future.”
This is not the first time Citizens Bank has been involved in financial literacy efforts. The bank this summer sponsored teachers from across the state as part of a seminar designed to help educators integrate financial education into their classrooms.
