Information about Fats, Oils and Grease that can save thousands of dollars

EDMOND — The City of Edmond’s FOG program helps homeowners learn to properly dispose of fats, oils and grease.

“These few simple tips will help you avoid a sewer back-up in your home. Not only is a sewer back-up unpleasant and unsanitary, the clean up can cost thousands of dollars and your homeowner’s insurance may not cover the cost,” said Public Information Officer Ashleigh Clark.

Fats, oils and grease eventually become solid rather than liquid and the grease will stick to the sides of sewer pipes and clog them. This can cause a back-up and an overflow in a home, or into the streets and streams.

“With the holidays quickly approaching and the treats and feasts in abundance, we want to remind residents the importance of FOG disposal and offer ways to help avoid any problems with clogs” Clark said.

Here are a few ways to help prevent back-ups in your home:

• Never pour grease down sinks or toilets.

• The best way to deal with butter, shortening, lard, meat fat and oils is to use an empty tin food can to store it. Then freeze the grease to make it solid and throw it in the trash. If you put a lid on the can, you can reuse your plastic lid on another can to store the FOG.

• Scrape fats, grease and food from plates and cooking utensils into the trash.

• Use basket strainers in your sinks to catch food and empty them into the trash.
