Food Network show visits Guthrie for ’89er Days

GUTHRIE — Guthrie’s annual ’89er Days Celebration provides a variety of activities for people to enjoy including a carnival, rodeo, parade and lots of food vendors.

This year, visitors at the 84th annual event, which runs Tuesday through Saturday, will notice an added bonus when a film crew from the new television series “Carnival Eats” will be in town filming for its inaugural episode.  

Jennifer Horvath, producer of the new series, said the crew from Alibi Entertainment in Toronto, Canada will be in Guthrie Thursday and Friday. The carnival and vendor area is located in a two-block area near First Street and Oklahoma Avenue across from the Santa Fe Depot.

Hovarth said the show will air in late August or early September on shows owned by Scripps Networks. The network’s lineup of shows includes the Food Network, Cooking Channel and Great American Country.

“We are a brand new series,” Horvath said. “It is a fun little show where our host travels across the country going to the different carnivals and festivals and eating the food and meeting the folks to make it.”

Horvath said they decided to film in Oklahoma because they are able to film scenes from two festivals in the state. This year also marks the 125th anniversary of the Oklahoma Land Run.

“This is our first episode when we come out to Oklahoma,” she said. “We were looking at what was available. We are going to two events there. We are going to the Apache Rattlesnake Festival as well. We were able to find two great events that were close together.”

Horvath said the show will be working with four different food vendors at the carnival highlighting the food they make including Indian tacos, cowboy cheesesteaks, and barbecue, among others. She said the host will be learning how to make the food and will prepare it for customers to try.

“We are going to be working with four different food vendors,” Horvath said. “We chose these folks because the stuff they are making sounds delicious. We wanted to have some sweets and barbecue. We thought this was a good cross section of what they offer.”

Horvath said the public is invited to come see the filming and try out the vendor’s food. Crews will be filming during the afternoon on both days. She said the best viewing time for the public on Thursday would be between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. and Friday afternoon from 1 p.m. to about 5 p.m.

“We would love to have lots of people out while we are there,” she said. “We want to get a sense of what the town is all about.”

A chuck wagon feast kicked off the ’89er Days Celebration on Tuesday at the Logan County fairgrounds with food, music and live and silent auctions.

A family focused carnival comes to town Wednesday through Saturday with more than 80 craft and food vendors lining the streets.

The Guthrie High School sophomore baseball team faces off against Midwest City Thursday at 4:30 p.m. at Squires Field in downtown Guthrie, followed by the traditional Old Timers game with period uniforms and equipment. For more information, call 260-1342.

On Thursday, a free family movie night featuring “Field of Dreams” sponsored by the City of Guthrie will be shown at 7:30 p.m. at the Territorial Capital Sports Museum, 315 W. Oklahoma Ave.

On Friday, starting at 5 p.m. the Guthrie Kiwanis’ Club will present a “Big Wheel” race for children ages 3-7. At 6 p.m. more than 200 classic cars and motorcycles will be parked on Oklahoma Avenue for the “Gasser, Geezers and Hogs” event sponsored by the Guthrie Rotary Club.

Following those “Wheel” events, the Guthrie Noon Lions Club is sponsoring two bands and an old fashioned street dance at Oklahoma and Second Street.

Friday and Saturday nights feature a rodeo at the fairgrounds starting at 7:30 p.m.

The ’89er Day parade will be at noon Saturday with Gov. Mary Fallin serving as parade marshal.

  • Wines of the West slated for June 7

    Stockyards City presents the fifth annual Wines of the West festival on Saturday. The event takes place from noon to 4 p.m. and features wine tasting in an Old West environment.
