Homeowners may be beginning to wonder why their evergreens resemble a palette of fall color. Many pines and arborvitaes are exhibiting shades of brown and yellow in their needles. With all of the other pine problems running rampant, this may be alarming, but there is no need to start tree shopping just yet.....more>>
It’s been said in this column and many others that one of the many joys of gardening is being able to share plants with friends. Sharing divisions is a great way to increase the diversity of plants in the garden without increasing the pressure on your pocketbook. But I do have some words of caution before you start introducing new plants into the yard.
The day the firewood gets delivered at my house is almost as magical as Christmas morning. There is nothing as relaxing as coming home in the dead of winter to sit in front of the fire. I look forward to this all year. Some may think that a person who sits on the hearth until her back just can’t take the heat anymore is crazy, but I suppose most gardeners are.
The Master Gardener Program is being offered by the Logan County OSU Cooperative Extension Service to provide horticultural training to home gardeners in Logan County.
I’ve always thought that the real gardeners are the people who are able to bring a full sun-loving plant indoors for the winter and keep it alive and thriving. STILLWATER — There is a noticeable chill in the crisp morning air. In many parts of the state, the leaves are starting to change color and giving the landscape a beautiful new look.

Since having a little girl four months ago, I have learned so many things. Most of those lessons have no place in an article about gardening. But one particular morning something appeared very clear to me, and this revelation came by the way of a message on my daughter’s pink and purple bib.
It’s real easy for me to sit at my computer and type away about all of the beautiful plants there are to plant in a flower bed, but it’s not nearly as easy to go pay for all of those new flashy varieties. I realize that money is tight in most homes these days, and it’s completely understandable that landscaping is considered to be a line item in the budget where cuts can be made. There are a few tips, however, that can make your gardening dollars stretch further across the yard.
Bulbs are perfect, self-contained packages for gardeners. They’re equipped with everything necessary to make flowers grow and bloom. Problem is, that makes them a prize for predators, too.
We have all heard this saying before: “I was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.” Some folks may even be unfortunate enough to know the feeling. It’s when you know that if the situation were tweaked just a bit, life would become a breeze.
To compost or not to compost, that is the question. I think many novice composters find themselves asking this question while holding a piece of who-knows-what in their hand. I’ve discovered that people want to do the right thing — they really do. But in their ignorance of not knowing what the right thing is they are frozen by the fear of possibly doing the wrong thing. Confused? Let me clarify.
